In this episode, Phil McLemore and I discuss his journey from Mormonism to the Kriya Yoga path. His evolution from organized religion to the mystical experiences of Kriya Yoga is an interesting story. In this interview we discuss many salient points on what it means to move from a novice to experienced meditator. We also discuss the value of considering the teachings of Jesus as a mystical (maybe even yogic) way to enlightenment.
Our Guest: Philip McLemore worked as a Campus Minister for 8 years at Auburn University, AL, and the University of Georgia. He then served as an active duty Air Force Chaplain for 21 years, followed by 8 years as a Hospice Chaplain. Philip turned to yoga meditation to help with a health crisis and awakened to an expansive spiritual life previously un-imagined. He has been teaching meditation for 20 years and has developed a system for teaching yoga meditation to Mormons and Christians. He was taught Kriya Yoga by Roy Eugene Davis, a direct student of Paramahansa Yogananda. In 2008 Mr. Davis ordained and authorized Phil to teach Kriya Yoga meditation and philosophy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast—best yet. Loved how Phil was connecting the dots with Jesus’s ministry to yoga that I never realized. Please do have Phil return to discuss more biblical references to yoga. Just as I was considering giving up on kriya pranayama because they were tedious and seeing no results, Phil discusses what occurred to him just as he was about to give up. I understand why Mr. Davis spoke of keeping experiences private, but those of us who are early in our journey don’t really know what to expect, what the point is of performing certain techniques, and simply saying “you’ll know” means nothing. I’m sure discussions can cross into TMI, but Ryan you have a natural instinct of where to gently draw that line. Learned quite a bit here today. Thanks.
